The Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (IFF) in Magdeburg, Germany, is engaged in applied research and development in the sectors of corporate strategy, corporate logistics and production systems. The Institute offers services in development and support of production-oriented rationalisation and automation. The work focuses on optimisation of company structures and processes and the development of market-oriented products to enhance the competitiveness of European industry. These goals are realised in research and development, production, service, quality assurance and management by identifying and exploiting company potentials. Laboratories with the latest technology and permanent basic research make the Fraunhofer Institute an attractive proposition for industry, public clients and international research partners. The Institute has a staff of 110 employees. 5,000m2 of office and laboratory space with modern equipment is available for research activities.

The main Department of Automation at the Fraunhofer IFF consists of the department of Robot Systems and the Department of Intelligent Sensor Systems and includes amongst other activities, the fields of service robots, factory automation, intelligent sensor systems and image processing. Within the NOMAD project the two Automation Departments are responsible for:

- the automatic navigation and high level control of the autonomous robot transportation vehicle (RTV)
- the Vision System for the automatic detection of position and orientation of part to be welded as well as the position of the RTV within the work cell
