TWI Ltd is one of the world's foremost research and technology organisations. Based at Great Abington, near Cambridge, UK since 1946, over 450 staff provide technical support in welding, joining and associated technologies such as NDT, surfacing, coating and cutting. Services include contract R&D, technical information, advice, consultancy, training and qualification. TWI uniquely offers a single, impartial source of these services for joining of engineering materials. It has extensive research facilities covering the full range of welding and joining processes, and also a group dedicated to manufacturing.

TWI is internationally renowned for its multidisciplinary teams that implement established or advanced joining technology, solving problems at any stage. The NOMAD project is in accord with the aims of TWI of being at the technological forefront of developments in the fields of automation, process monitoring and process development.
